This great old cartoon tells you where I'm going with this month's newsletter, and haven't we all been here?! Yep - this is exactly what I teach you all, here and as clients, but I also have a bit of 'me, too' about all this. My coaching tells you that you have an ever-changing, every-evolving persona, and we need to be ready for that and embrace these changes. That includes adjusting your space and everything in it to suit The New You!
One of the biggest changes for me was the realization, many years ago now, that I was no longer going to reside in the Corporate World. I gladly donated/sold my beautiful suits, got rid of the high heels and nylons and all the paraphernalia that goes along with that. One last thing, though, took me a long time to finally ditch: my brass name plate! Can you just imagine how silly that is? Sheesh ....
It was, truly, acknowledging that part of my life was over and done with, and I most certainly didn't need it on my desk as a solo-preneur! Can't remember what I did with it - it's probably in a landfill somewhere (my bad) - but I remember the relief in acknowledging that a 'new me' was now ready to blossom and grow. Hooray!
So, one more pile to deal with now, related to the above cartoon: years ago, I purchased and enrolled in a productivity certification system that seemed like it might take my business to 'the next level.' Not only did I dole out over a $1000 for the program, related books and materials, but I convinced a colleague to do the same! And, then? The team involved decided to retire and all was for naught! UGH!
While we might have been allowed to profer some of the materials and coaching within specific parameters, just the thought of presenting any bit of it out of those parameters was legally daunting. I did not need a lawsuit over something that like! So, for years the pile has sat in my bookshelf, taking up needed space!
OK, heed my lesson here: GET RID of stuff that causes you any sense of negativity or angst! Meet the New You with excitement and have the space allowed to do just that! I'm doing that today, before I even get showered and into my day, and then can rearrange the books I do refer to, read and reread in the space I've so needed, instead of being on top of other books!
WOW! Do I feel better? Do I feel powerful? Do I feel ready to meet new challenges and adventures, instead of grousing on 'what might have been'? You bet! Regrets? Not a one!
Here's to your success in jumping in and finding something that's been bugging you! Onward toward positivity in change and owning your present, instead of being bogged down by your past!!! Yahoo!!!
Have you noticed that I've gotten a bit off track with my correspondence lately? Hmmm.... Yep, busy playing in this long, hot summer and just plain enjoying Life! Now that Fall is officially here, I'm back at my desk and paying attention once again!
We had a call from our electric company recently, informing us that we'd won $50 since we do e-bill and e-pay and our prize can be credited toward that bill. Wahoo! Feeling like I'd just won the Big Lotto or something, I started really being cognizant of all these little 'prizes' that come our way each and every day:
Seems all we have to do is just pay a little attention and our Abundance Reality just comes pouring out! Nope - I'm not a 'religious' person, but do believe in being thankful for all that comes my way, and counting blessings along the route. And you know what? It isn't even close to Thanksgiving yet! HA!
Here's to recognizing and cherishing the abundance in your life! Just start making note of the little things - even your nice, even breath - and you're on your way!
Wahoo! I have to admit: I'm even happier to be sending off a few thoughts to you today, knowing that this is the 8th anniversary of SOS to the Rescue! Time sure does fly when you're having fun, doesn't it?
This may seem redundant to some of you, but I just can't keep off the proverbial soap box about recognizing "too much," whether it's stuff you're tripping over, things on your never-ending To-Do List or too much vacation time on the books at the office!
That last one really got to me, because I was so guilty of that in my former corporate life. As noted in an article in my Sunday paper via the Kansas City Star (Diane Stafford), time-taken from well-earned hours has been steadily decreasing since 1983. Yikes! No wonder folks are so stressed; driving frantically; experiencing one health crisis after another; raging in too many unwarranted situations. Everyone's just too sick and tired, right?!
Why aren't you taking your well-deserved and duly-earned time off work?
1. No one wants to return to a 2-foot tall pile of work-not-done.
2. There is no cross-training so no one can do your job.
3. Don't get promoted - that just makes it even harder to get away!
4. Employees think that by being on-the-job almost 24/7 they're showing their employers dedication (Really? Heard of Bottom-Line Management?).
5. Maybe you think your co-workers and boss won't like it if you take time away from the office (Of course they won't - they have to work harder!)?
6. If you're not at your desk, are your worried you'll be replaced?
Valid points, all, surely, but who's really hurting here if you don't go on that vacation? YOU - your family - your health - your peace of mind! UGH! Been there - done that!
But you know what the Project: Time Off surveyers came down to? PLAN! Get that vacation time circled on the calendar ASAP and then GO! Communicate with your peers and management team - don't wait for the chip-on-the-shoulder anger or burnout to catch you unawares.
But, wait: give me a few more seconds of your time, please. That little rant was about vacation-time abundance, just sitting and waiting to be used, right? How about some of the other abundance in your life?
Allow me to remind you of too much stuff, OK? That (followed closely by not enough time) is pretty much what keeps me in business, thank you very much, but wouldn't it be great if YOU owned your excess abundance and it didn't own you? Keep working on keeping only what you need; what you love; what serves you well and provides a useful function for you. Envision; plan; purge; sort; containerize; keep on adjusting to The New You!
Trim down that To-Do List to Must Do's or, better yet, hit the Delete Button on a lot of those items that you just keep moving from day to day; week to week; month to month. It's perfectly fine to amend that list to a NOT-To-Do List - banish the guilt and get on with what you really want to do or can do. Life's too short for all the angst we keep dumping on ourselves for .... WHAT? Societal expectations? Cultural or age-driven expectations? Find the time to fulfill YOUR life in YOUR way, albeit keeping up with the true expectations that are warranted in your own personal situation.
WOW! Now that was a soap box, eh?! I feel better, and I just hope that you'll be able to take a tiny bit of my prodding to find a bit less of this sort of abundance in your life - and get out there and smell the roses, the real abundance!
Wishing you small victories; increased awareness; positivity; personal power; and, above all, a release from 'just too much' of anything!
